Book folding: the complete guide to the art of folding books

Book folding is the craft of folding a book's sheets to form images, names, dates and phrases in relief. This page is the overview: how it works, which techniques exist, materials, common mistakes and the step-by-step guides of the Foleart Method.

What book folding is

Every sheet of the book is folded at calculated points. Seen from the front, the sequence of folds draws an outline — a heart, a name, a word, a symbol. The book stops being something to read and becomes a sculpture.

Precision decides the result: a sheet marked 2 mm off throws the whole figure out of line. So the heart of the craft is not the fold itself, it is the measurement table — the pattern that says where to mark each sheet.

In the Foleart Method that pattern is generated automatically for the exact book in your hands, which removes both the ruler and the sheet-by-sheet math.

Instead of building the fold table by hand, upload an image or type a word: the generator does the sheet-by-sheet math and prints the pattern scaled to your book.

Frequently asked questions about book folding

What is book folding?

Book folding is the craft of folding a book's sheets at calculated points so that, seen from the front, the folds form an image, a name, a date or a phrase in relief.

Do I need to draw or calculate measurements?

No. The pattern defines where to mark each sheet. With the Foleart Method the pattern is generated automatically for the exact book in your hands, so there is no drawing and no sheet-by-sheet math.

How many sheets does the book need?

The more sheets, the more definition in the figure. Most projects use between 180 and 400 sheets — remember each sheet holds two pages.

How long does a project take?

The time depends mostly on the number of sheets, not on how complex the figure is. Most projects are finished in around 2 hours.

Which book is best to start with?

A hardcover book with matte (not glossy) paper and sheets of even thickness. Coated paper slips and does not hold the crease.

Can I reuse the same pattern on another book?

It is not recommended. The pattern is calculated for a specific sheet count and page height; switching books throws the figure out of line.

Do I have to cut the sheets?

Not necessarily. Many projects are made with folds only, without scissors or a craft knife.

Is the pattern generator free?

The generator is part of the plans that unlock the platform. You can see what it does on the generator page and pick the plan that includes access.
